Salinger passes away
J.D. Salinger died today. I loved Catcher in the Rye when I was a teenager but I’ve never read it a second time.
I’ve heard some people say that when they returned to it as adult readers, it had lost most of its appeal. Maybe it’s only miserable and selfish teenagers who can enjoy reading about another miserable and selfish teenager, but to me, Holden Caulfield is one of those unforgettable characters of fiction.
In a disturbing way, Salinger was a memorable character himself. I wish it weren’t so, but his story is far sadder and stranger than Holden Caulfield’s.
